Wonder if they wet the floor to reduce static electricity?

I had to eliminate Static Electricity at a remote test site where the instrumentation trailer had carpeting.  Just mix a weak solution of water and soap, spray over the carpet.  Re-new when necessary. Works like a charm.

I don't know. I'd guess they had been cleaning the hull.

What a horrible idea. Destroy a lake, a sizable one at that, for this. Dig another canal through Costa Rica or another one next to the current canal a few miles away.

I agree about the location, but why would they destroy the lake (I didn't read it, sorry...)? Still seems like a lot of unnecessary digging. I hate digging.

The current Panama Canal is being plagued by drought.

The original Panama Railroad - the true first transcontinental railroad in the Americas - was rebuilt and modernized a few years ago so that containers could be offloaded on one side, carried across, and reloaded on the other side. initially this was to allow large container ships to transit but the drought has greatly increased its traffic

Yes, but the canal and adjoining lakes are fresh water and very vital.

This will introduce all kinds of "stuff' to the interior freshwater lakes and rivers...not good...

We have two later models of this target floating around in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.
