Suspect the Iowa class battleships included in their specifications “fit Panama Canal locks”. Modern aircraft carriers can’t - thus twice as many needed.

That is correct. There is also a class of cargo ships that are PanaMax class. The max size possible and still make the passage.

This is why they are planning a second, wider canal.

Believe larger locks have now been built at canal ends.

The old Panama Railroad which crosses roughly parallel to the canal was rebuilt with container handling facilities at the ends. Unloading some containers and transporting them by rail across Panama for reloading raises some ships enough that they could use the locks. Believe Kansas City Southern operates the Panama Railroad under contract.

Wondering what makes the proposed route of the Nicaragua Canal more desirable than one over Costa Rica or even another one over Panama. The lake and rivers to supply operating water?

Flatter I think. But not really sure.

I imagine that having that really large lake to act as a reservoir to feed the locks is a big advantage.

Less digging. They can overlay existing waterways.
