crockett
I'm getting really tired of our Florida summer fun weather. Thunderstorms every day. Today I saw lightning hitting my neighbors house, and 10 minutes later my house got struck as well. So far 2 security cams and my core switch are toast. Not your average switch, a freakin CISCO 10 G switch worth 2 grand. I think the electricity managed to get into the CAT 7 wiring in my attic.

LostinTexas
You may have, but investing in surge protectors are a must in this day and time. Replace them about every 7-10 years as indicated. Glad it missed you.

The lightning didn't hit the power lines, ours are in the ground, it hit my roof and the electrostatic discharge reached my ethernet cables in the attic. Surge protectors on LAN cables don't work well, and there are none for 10 G POE systems. There is literally nothing I can do to prevent this. While my 4 slave switches are connected to the core switch with fiber optics, hence safe from discharges, all my devices still use copper connections only. That may change over time... kerbie18
That's some serious electronics just to have installed in your own house. A $2000 ethernet switch? Wow. Anyway, sorry for your bad luck.

gwalchmai
Insurance is probably the only solution in this case. Does your homeowners have an equipment rider?
Peng
I lost my beloved plasma TV to a lightning strike a few years ago, man that sucked. You can't buy them anymore - LCD rules the world of TV's now. I think it was manufacturing costs that killed plasma. Same reason the HK P7m8 does not rule the handgun world. Superior gun but way too expensive. LCD sucks in quality compared to the plasma especially at high frame rates but it's good enough I guess. At least that's what China is allowing us to own right now.
jfost11
Some years ago lightning must have hit the utility pole because I had a cable box and dvd player in a bedroom get fried. I still had a tube tv in there and that thing was fine. About a week later I figured out why it had been such a quiet week from telemarketers and wrong numbers on the answering machine. The phone lines at the box on the house were melted together, as well as the jack in the wall. 1

That CAT7 is awesome. 4pair shielded plus an external braid jacket. However, you've got to leave 1 side of the ground open. All that said, 1 Billion Volts tends to do what it wants. We've got Faraday cages in most of the shelters. Lightning still finds a way. It'll take out a diode, opto-isolator, etc. A close strike produces a considerable EMP that will fry anything not hardened or drained correctly.

They are all grounded to the server rack, on one side only. The shielding only works for low energy fields from AC lines etc, not a lightning strike worth a couple hundred million volts unloading just a few feet away. Getting CAT 7 cable, terminals and tools in the US 3 years ago wasn't easy. While its a standard in Europe, the US is running behind.

In hurricane land you keep your get-out-of-jail-cards for the big ticket items.

Bolted to the wall? 1

Yeah, I've got plenty of power to do that if necessary Cap'n. Each one of those on the end will push 400W. That's not counting the1200 watt C-band's in the lower shelters.

I got a 3rd Synology NAS in my gun safe with a high fire rating, doing incremental backups every night. The server is not sitting on that weak ass shelf, that crap came with the house, only looks like it in the photo. There's a gab of 2 inches. I would never install those crap shelves in my life. I bolted 2 x 3/4" plywood sheets to the studs in the wall, and secured the rack with 8 x M12 bolts to the plywood. Rack is hooked up to its own HVAC return, keeping it at 75 F.
kerbie18
During any EMP level event that is strong enough to wipe out all my data, I guess some of my data is somewhat shielded. But, at that point I'm going to be more worried about ramen noodles to eat for another day than whether or not my latest porn video got backed up.... To each his own :}
