DrB
I do not smoke but carry one around here on the farm in the fall for starting brush and leaves up. Always love the distinctive click when opened, the sparks of the flint and the smell of the fluid lighting. Is part of fall for me every year. Don't miss the burning on the leg when I overfill though. Dave.. Edited November 9, 2019 by DrB 3

Valmet
I haven’t had a cigarette for nearly six years but I dream about it still, following the click and smell of the classic zippo.

Borg warner
Yep. I used to smoke cigarettes, cigars, and a pipe and had a few Zippos. I gave up cigarettes in 1998 and started smoking a pipe and then gave that up too, but still smoked cigars. I gave up cigars 2 years ago.
ASH
Still got my old satin plain Jane I bought from the tinder box in the mall when I was 13 and yeah it's must have on a farm.
Administrators Eric Posted November 9, 2019 Administrators Share Posted November 9, 2019 I smoked for fifteen years. I bought a camo Zippo in the PX in Basic and carried it for years. Some ******* stole it off my table at a nightclub, when I was in my mid-twenties. The thing that I don't miss about it is the chemical burn you'd get on your leg, if you overfilled it. You wouldn't realize it was getting you until it had gotten you. Anyway, I got a lot of miles out of that lighter. 3
DWARREN123
I have used them in the far past. Lot of times had to use MO-GAS in them, could not get lighter fluid in the field. MO-GAS sucks as a substitute for lighter fluid and for gas! 2

Huaco Kid
I had a full 3rd degree burn on my leg where the skin was even rubbing off. Like Eric said, you don't know your getting burned until it's too late.
Huaco Kid
I recently bought a wicked-cool KISS zippo. My wife heard me chuckle when I opened the package and asked what I had ordered. Then she said, "Damn! Can you just give that to me so I can wrap it up and give it to you for Christmas?" 1
Walt Longmire
I have a bunch of them. I carry them when out hunting, riding the wheeler, or heading way back on the Refuge on the snow machine. I also carry extra flints and fuel in one of those little aluminum kerosene pots. They always work. Get a Bic wet and it's done till it dries out.
Huaco Kid
I was recently smoking outside an airport when a Chinese girl (obviously didn't speak American) motioned for a light. I handed her my zippo. She deftly opened and lit it. But then she didn't know how to put it out. She waited, and looked at it, for a couple seconds, then she waved it around, which made the flame whip into a fireball, then she panicked and threw it on the ground, 3' away. She seemed embarrassed. I thought it was funny.
Zonny
I can still hear and smell my father's Zippo and it's been at least 50 years. I believe my oldest brother has it. Wonder if he lights it once in awhile. 1
Huaco Kid
If you enjoy the nostalgic smell of a zippo, fire up one of those old Jon-E handwarmers. Everyone within a city block can enjoy it too. 1
DrB
My Mom's old Zippo. She had in the early 60's. I sent it back to Zippo a few years ago to have fixed.. No Cost, good company.
Maccabeus
I haven't carried mine in decades. While bone dry right now, I still keep them nearby. I never smoked, but still found occasions where they were handy, not to mention they're just fun to fiddle with. Way better than fidget spinners. I never noticed the chemical burn problem, but then, I carried mine in my back pocket, so I can't really say if hair is still growing evenly in that area or not! Huaco Kid
I bought some new ones, and I never knew they existed, or how long they've had them; Zippo "Armor". The case is 1.5X thicker!! woooo! And, yes, you can tell. The 'click' is way clickier and louder, and the shell is noticeably thicker. Other than that, it's pretty much the exact same. I thought it was funny. You had to open them by holding your thumb against the bottom while snapping your index finger down the cap. When it popped open, then you snapped your fingers against the wheel causing it to light. Any other way wasn't "cool".
