Anyway, kick-starting a bike can be a real workout, especially with big cube and/or cold-blooded engines. I’ve had a couple of bikes with kick-starters and they could be a real PITA when the weather was cold. My 200cc two cycle Vespa is pure kick start and it is sometimes stubborn. Especially if it has been some time since I’ve ridden. A can of spray quick start - ether - simplifies matters when necessary. If you didn't get it off the ratchet or it backfired, you ended up 20 feet away on your head. Being a British product, you really didn't have to worry about trying to straddle the huge gas tank.
