pipedreams
The Western Electric Kearny Works was 3 million-square-foot, 144-acre facility and just one of a number of large mfg. plants around the country. It employed about 4000 people at one time as did most of the other mfg plants. Then there was the W.E. service centers which were smaller and did refurbishing and repair of equipment. The service center in the Los Angeles area was 575,000 sq. ft and employed close to 1000 at one time. That building is still there at 2400 Yates Ave. City of Commerce, CA.

A friend who worked at the Nashville plant liberated some “pop rivets” which worked differently from those found in hardware stores today. These, which were used to fasten coin slot devices (nickels, dined, quarters) to the top of pay phones, exploded at the rear when the front was pressed into the mounting hole with a soon to be hot iron. Also, this is just the output from the two waist guns and maybe the radio operator. The turrets ejected out of the plane. 3
