This is from Dallas, TX 1940.
'A woman from Oak Cliff (a Dallas neighborhood) made a complaint that she did not want to look at girls’ legs when she stopped by her local drive-in; she wanted to look at men’s legs. Drive-in owners thought that this was a great idea, and soon the idea of the scantily-clad male carhop was born.

The photo ran in newspapers around the country with the headline: “Adonis and Apollo of Roadside Bring Trade to Daring Stand.”'

1942. Colmar Manor, Maryland

There's a story behind this photo. These cars belonged to a salvage outfit, meaning the owner took parts 'n pieces from wrecks to make serviceable cars and sold the rest as parts. The government decided otherwise, that the owner was withholding scrap needed for the war effort. So they confiscated the lot, destroying scarce automobiles and his business.

Really? The Government? I'm shocked.

Driving Around New York City - 1928

I remember my father driving in Minneapolis in the 40's, when you had cars and electric Trolleys riding rails mixed in with the cars to deal with.  Even the red brick streets would throw your car around besides getting the tires caught in the rails.   It was pretty hairy sometime when the trolley decided that the congestion didn't apply to them.
