At first that method of steering looks awkward.  But considering that there was a minimum of mechanical advantage in the steering geometry, it makes perfect sense to have the driver pushing forward with his whole arm rather than trying to turn a steering wheel.  He could put his upper body strength to work for him.

Yes.  Remember according to the movies everyone smoked, drank, and wore tuxedos at home for dinner too.  Back then women dressed to kill, now they kill for the dress.
