Administrators Eric Posted February 2, 2021 Administrators Share Posted February 2, 2021 They launched the SN9 Starship today. It looked great until they tried to restart engines. It looks like only one came online properly. It belly-flopped and exploded a few hundred feet from SN10. I’m sure it must be frustrating for them, but their progress is still impressive. Maybe the third try will be the charm.
Dric902
The decision to not use boosters may have to be rethought

kAr
At least it didn't belly flop on top of SN10, not sure why the launch sites would be so close together.
DWARREN123
Failures cost money so they hopefully learned a lot.
Fog
There was a fire outside the engines about 4:43. Lower right inset.

tadbart
That thing was so loaded down with sensors, they'll know exactly where the failure was as soon as they interpret the data. Space is hard. Musk is doing more to push the future of space exploration than any other person or government in the world. Dude's eccentric, but he's a dreamer and doer. That was a mighty big boom, though. I wonder about a drogue chute, just to get the thing pointing vertical again on the way down.
