gwalchmai
I just got this in an email from a state senator: Per the Governor's call to action, healthy Georgians are being asked to donate blood in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. Our state's hospitals are anticipating or already experiencing an alarming blood shortage. Med pros, why would the COVID make us short of blood? Thanks!

PPQer
I'm not a "pro", but I am a lowlife. I would bet that since most blood donation centers aren't sprawling metropolises, and people are in a small space, the whole social distancing thing goes out the window. And right now people have something serious on their mind and the last thing they think of is donating blood. It's all about toilet paper, perishables, and panic. People tend to forget the little things in times of stress. Edited March 18, 2020 by PPQer
railfancwb
A lot of blood donations take place in mobile centers - custom made buses - brought from the urban areas to rural ones. And that entire process collapses when people are told to stay home.
Silentpoet
I tried to donate blood, but apparently it has to be your own and not in a bucket. 1 1

They were so picky about that whole Mad Cow thing. They said I can’t donate until I pay for some expensive tests to prove I don’t have it. I think it would have shown up over the last 30 years. 2
DWARREN123
Donations are down and donating events have been cancelled. Seems that there is always a blood shortage.
railfancwb
I gave for many years - about 17 gallons - but last time I tried I had been recently diagnosed with Postate cancer and was rejected.

railfancwb
Many years ago my wife had a problem with internal bleeding in the liver. They tried numerous things to stop it. The last thing they tried before scheduling surgery was to give her two units of whole blood. That stopped the bleeding.
Batesmotel
I was exposed to Mad Cow. The test to clear me is $900. Can’t donate unless I pay for the test and it clears me.
