I looked that thing up.  Basically it's a small turbine engine that bolted to the rear diff via a clutch.  Used a fuel that supplied it's own oxygen.  Actually in that regard not that different from how many hybrid cars are designed. 

This thing was essentially an on/off setup.  Biggest problem is that the tires at the time couldn't handle the power.

Honestly it seems like something that, with some development, could be a good idea.  Though nowadays I imagine an electric motor could do something similar (and does in cars such as the Prius).  Issue there would be the heavy-ass batteries or some sort of generator setup (probably still need batteries or capacitors).

Company founder/owner went to jail on mail fraud or something.  Not sure if that's related to this thing or not but his company (Turbonique) did a lot of cool turbine stuff, including APUs.
