Tous' comment helped me figure it out.

I didn't recognize it as a Pinto at first, and was trying to figure out how "Signal Lubrication" figured into it.

From Mad Magazine, many years ago - 'Infernophobia' - fear of being rear ended while driving a Ford Pinto.

Others call that "Sanity".

What really sucked is not only was the car basically a rolling Zippo, when it was hit in the rear the entire body would tend to warp and make the doors stick shut.....

At least you have the rest of your life to figure a way out.

True.

But the whole episode does speak to the arrogance of Ford.  They could have easily fixed the issue for something like $1 a car, had they chosen to.

Apparently porn stars want to be my friend on Facebook.  Got another one of those African scammers today sending me a request.  The woman was impressively endowed with knockers.  But being as I am single and lonely I recognized her picture. The funny part is a few pictures down the scammer posted what looks to be a picture of himself.

That's the mark of a well though out "DEATH TRAP".

My wife got one, a 3 door, when they first came out.  Then I found out that she couldn't even go forward, when she backed out of the driveway onto the icy street (No weight over the rear axel) unless I walked out and gave her a one handed push to get her going,  I bought her a Squire Wagon the following year when they came out.  The dealer gave me my full new purchase price of the 3 door against the price of the wagon.  He said they were selling that well.  The wagon did quite well in the snow and ice, 200 more pounds on the rear axel.

My daughter bought one when they were on their last legs.  Got a hell of a good deal.  A few years later she sold it to her sister, who got a lot of time out of it too.  Then my son bought it while he was going to college.  He totaled it and rebuilt it. One daughter hit a deer with it.  It kept on trucking all those years.  That 2 liter engine was really good.

The public was made to believe that Pintos burst into flames everyday, many times a day for no reason at all.  The reality was much different. Out of the 2.2 million cars that were produced in the period, there were about 27 deaths and a couple hundred injuries related to fires.  so about 1 in 100,000. Not exactly common. I am not saying Ford did not screw up. They did, it was an easy fix that could have been a quick running change especial the tank bladder, or the plastic differential plates. Like many thinks things get blown way out of proportion.

Kinda like the Explorer blow outs and rollovers. It seems if you maintained safe speeds for conditions, maintained safe tire pressures and tread, and drove it like the high center of gravity vehicle it is, you didn't have problems. Had one for years, never had a blow-out or a rollover.  I must have gotten a special one, as the press lead you to believe that they all did it, every single day. If you rode in an explorer, you were a dead man walking.

I get the joke of the picture, but the flames should have been more upwards licking rather like you were driving backwards at 60mph on fire. If you are going to do a joke, make sure you execute it well.

The Corvair took the rap for swing axels too, in spite of the fact that the VW had the same suspension and nothing was said about it.

Crap happens.
