Basically they were just Fords with a few changes. But when first introduced in 1958 there were actually two Edsels The larger (122 inch wheelbase) Mercury-based Citation and Corsair, and the slightly smaller (118 inch wheelbase) Ford-based Pacer and Ranger. The Citation and Corsair were built on the Mercury assembly line and used a 410 cubic inch Mercury engine. The Pacer and Ranger were built on the Ford assembly line and used Ford engines After the car's initial failure in the marketplace the more expensive Mercury based Edsels were discontinued. In 1959 they improved the looks but it was too late. The Edsel was discontinued in 1960. I think if they had introduced the 1959 body style in 1958 and offered the car only as a Lincoln-Mercury based luxury car they might have done better.
