They arrested the English Ambassador during the airliner riots and later released him.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if the Iranians overthrow the Mullahs because of the shootdown and " they " blame Trump again for the regime change.

It does show that they know which side their Butter is on.  Bluster isn't everything.

But it helps to keep your own population distracted from hating the regime.

https://en.radiofarda.com/a/iran-s-...onsibility-for-downing-airliner/30371719.html

" Following Iran's admission it shot down a Ukrainian airliner, General Amir-Ali Hajizadeh, Commander of the Revolutionary Guard's Aerospace Force, has accepted "all responsibility" and said he wished he had died when he heard about his force's responsibility for the tragedy, official IRNA news agency reported. "

I'm thinking the General may get his wish.

" Hajizadeh said Iran's air defense was in the highest alert state and had been told that [American] cruise missiles had been fired. The operator of the system that fired the missile at the plane took it for a missile and due to overload or possible jamming of the communication system could not establish contact with the command center. "He had 10 seconds to decide to fire or not and unfortunately took the bad decision of firing and hit the plane," Hajizadeh added. "

Gee, I wonder who could have been doing that ?

Make up whatever details you can, to squeeze even a little blame for someone else.

When they said this, they are admitting quite a bit of information for their technology, lack of lower ranks discipline, and a fragile chain of command.

Remember the 176 souls lost, and yes, the Iranian air defense system will be smoking holes in the ground just before the good stuff arrives.

That would be the right time for Iranian defenders to be afraid.

Very afraid.

This incident remains just so sad for the crew and passengers of that aircraft.

Some news reports indicate that that particular ADS ( SA-15? ) has an automatic mode and they don't need a finger to push the button.

However, it is astonishing that anyone, regardless of how depraved, would park such a device near a commercial airport and I don't see  the tactical purpose of such an automatic system.

That's part of the reason we are at odds with the ME.  Logic fails when you try to figure out their reasoning.

That shouldn't have made any difference.

A commercial airliner emits like a fireworks show to  ADS search and target systems.

VHF/UHF radio, weather RADAR, a transponder -- not exactly the profile of a hostile aircraft, but exaclty the profile of an innocent one.

Another thought.

Some reports hint that there may have been jamming going on and that confused the ADS operator.

If the aircraft was only eight miles away from rotation, it was likely still within the range the the airport approach/departure RADAR and that may have affected the ADS systems, but again, there is a distinct difference between a commercial airport RADAR  and hostile jamming.  Any competent operator would know where they were and what was emitting around them and what jamming looks like.

“Competent” being the operative word there

Anybody else think the Iranians should recruit ol' Tous to run their air defenses?

For someone who knows what they're doing, the accommodations suck, but I bet the paycheck is pretty impressive.

You better run to the bank with that check. before the bank and regime is gone!

I have it on good authority that they have liquid cash.

They may have to reconsider that.  Today's news is that the government shot some citizens protesting in the streets against the Iran government shooting down an Iranian commercial flight.

CBS News tonight had video of two different missiles hitting the 737 30 seconds apart. It still flew for a while after the second hit.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/14/world/iran-plane-crash-video.html

" Neither strike downed the plane immediately. The new video shows the airliner on fire, circling back toward Tehran’s international airport. "

Boeing evidently knows how to build them, even if they don't know how to program them.
