TBO
St. Paul cop offers alleged shoplifter a break, gets stabbed A Saint Paul cop was stabbed by a homeless woman Monday evening after he had offered to give her a break for allegedly shoplifting from a grocery store, according to a report. Officer Joe Ryan approached the woman around 8 p.m. after store employees told him that a woman had hidden items in her clothing without paying for them, the Star Tribune reported. He offered to let her return the stolen items without punishment, according to the paper. The woman – later identified as 23-year-old Articia L. Moore – denied having stolen anything, even though Ryan could allegedly see the concealed items. She then returned a single item. Ryan told her to return the rest. The woman explained she was homeless and became uncooperative, The Tribune reported. Ryan grabbed her arm after allegedly seeing a knife handle in her pocket. A scuffle ensued, and the woman allegedly struck Ryan in the chest with a screwdriver and in the arm with a knife, according to a criminal complaint. Ryan brought her under control and arrested her. Ryan’s vest protected him against the screwdriver, while his left bicep had a minor cut, according to the charges. Moore was charged Tuesday in Ramsey County District Court with second-degree assault and assaulting a police officer. https://www.foxnews.com/us/st-paul-cop-offers-alleged-shoplifter-break-gets-stabbed Sent from my Jack boot using Copatalk 1
blueiron
Cute and endearing publicity stories aside, the idea of cop as community social justice advocate/facilitator is not always appropriate.
Duluth
Why not charge her with attempted murder? 1

Oh, yeah. Never give a sucker an even break. Many times turning the other cheek will get you slapped again. Probably because they know she's homeless and would benefit from being in prison for an extended sentence. TBO
Why not charge her with attempted murder? That would require a much higher threshold of proof.https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/609.222VS.https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/609.222Sent from my Jack boot using Copatalk
PATCHMAN
The FBI's 1992 study "Killed In the Line of Duty" concluded that some behavioral descriptors of victim officers are: () they see themselves as Officer Friendly to everyone, (2) tend to look for good in everyone and (3) tend to perceive self as more public relations than law enforcement (Table 6 of study) 2

I'm glad to hear Officer Ryan will recover. It could have been much worse. 2
Mike
My understanding is that a normal cops vest will not stop a knife. I was reading that jail guards have a different type of puncture resistant vest that helps with that. Did the vest stop the screwdriver because of the blunt end or am I not understanding something? blueiron
Not all knives are created or maintained equally. So too do scalars of force vary, as do Euclidean vectors, the aramid material used, etc.

It has been this way from it's inception, Minnesota is so left wing that they have their own version of a left wing extreme version of the Democratic party. This is the home of the Democratic Farm Labor Party. In the past they were too left even for the Democratic party, but the National Dems have been moving left to such a degree that they are turning into the same extremists as the DFL of Minnesota. What has changed, is that communications is better and more inclusive of this states liberalism (a misnomer if their was one). The idiot liberals of Minnesota are getting more press now than ever before. This is the home of "Votes before anything!"
