How did US Navy carrier pilots navigate during WW2?

Commander Jame H. Flatley, Jr, with his Mark 3A plotting board, about to climb into his Grumman F6F-3, 1943.  This essential piece of equipment and the knowledge and skill required to use it, was vital to our victory in the Pacific War.

This is the Fritz X ..the first guided bomb is history ..on   9 September 1943 it also became the first such bomb to sink a ship in combat – the Italian battleship Roma which as a great accomplishment in the year 1943.. it really goes to show how advanced the Germans were at that time.

My uncle served as a Gunners Mate on the USS Savannah CL-42 and survived this attack on September 11,1943 by a FritzX. There was a large scale model (covered with glass) of his ship on my grandmothers dining room buffet. My uncle would only speak about that day if he had been heavily drinking.https://www.history.navy.mil/browse-by-topic/wars-conflicts-and-operations/world-war-ii/1943/salerno-landings/savannah-salerno.html
