The 9,600 number is considered on the lower end of estimates.  It was designed for 1500 plus crew, and was evacuating people from East Prussia as the Soviets approached.  Unsolved History did studies and confirmed the number as much as possible.  About 1000 were picked up and saved, putting the number of people aboard at 10,600 to 11,000.  Some have claimed several thousand more were aboard.

This is a picture I took in 1986 of my car in front of the local high school hangout on Main Street in Moscow, Idaho.  Ted's Burger Express was an ex-A&W drive-in and was in business from the late 70's to the late 90's.  Car was my 1969 Torino GT Sportsroof with a 351W 4V motor.  Only 300hp or so when stock and I rebuilt it in auto shop and kept it pretty mild; maybe 350hp.

Terry Sawchuk – The face of a hockey goalie before masks became standard game equipment, 1966

As I recall, the one of the first goalies to wear a mask actually drew stitches on his facemask for every shot to the face he took (apparently in the general area where it hit).  Kinda an attention-getter.
