Sad part is - I think - even after liberating the camps, the soldiers had to withhold food from the prisoners until they could be examined.  Apparently eating too much too soon would have been dangerous.  My 10 second Google research supports this.  That had to be tough.

That is true, usually they have to start with liquids and light meals until the body can adjust.  I imagine even a good cup of hot soup was appreciated in their condition.
