pipedreams
Coming into town brings back memories of long by gone days. A time before the interstates and back roads were the only way to travel. When Sunday drives were the highlight of the week. An adventure waiting to be found. Found in McCormick, South Carolina. 1

Huaco Kid
I traded a pack of cigarettes for a 1884 silver dollar, in bush-Alaska. At first, I kind of felt bad for taking advantage. Then I learned what a pack of smokes is worth around there, and what a well-worn dollar is worth. He might have gotten the better of the deal (except I only buy the $3 cigs from down south) It's got a prominent spot on my desk. I like to wonder how many pickaxes, hats, bottles of booze, hookers, boots, shovels.... it has purchased in it's lifetime. How many hands of poker has it been in? 3

My granddad smoked two packs of unfiltered Pall Malls every day until he died of emphysema and a heart attack at 59. The year I turned 59 was a tough one for me because I took after him a lot. I smoked for about ten years in my teens and twenties but was able to quit. Doc said smoking is the overwhelmingly highest correlation to bladder cancer. 1
