While I think many self important officials take things way too far, and some of the regulations are stupid, at it's most basic level it's needed to protect clueless people, of which we have way too many. Selling products, food, etc. Take a look at some 3rd world countries as to what passes for food. It's not actually all that uncommon to find rice in southeast Asia that has plastic in it, or manufactured rice that's broken grains of rice, ground down, then held together with glue to be the same shape as rice. Just one of many examples. I'm not a proponent of big government, but there are actual ways that government involvement improves our quality of life, and helps preserve things for the future. As for some of the others, it's not the same world it was 125 years ago. Population is huge, technology has drastically changed the way life is lived, and there isn't enough of anything to go around if it's not controlled somehow. In the past it was up to individuals to control themselves, and the community's job to police itself. Now communities are too large, and not "communal" in any sense of the word. Everyone you live next to is a stranger who cares only for themselves. Yes, the government extorts huge amounts of money from the average citizen (tax paying ones that is) because over the past 125 years WE HAVE ALLOWED THEM TO DO SO. Only one of them was even remotely associated with MLK. And when he was standing next to him, he seemed a good man, but lost his way when he started making money and gaining influence after the murder. Andrew Young and Jesse Jackson went to completely different ways. Young was decent even if you didn’t agree with him, Jackson was corrupted by money and fame. Obama is a political animal.
