Administrators Eric Posted January 31, 2020 Author Administrators Share Posted January 31, 2020 In 1931, 12 year old Herbert Niccolls Jr. shot the Asotin County Sheriff. Early in the morning of August 5, he broke into an Asotin supply store to steal candy and cigarettes. Sheriff John Wormell and the store owner entered the store to apprehend him, and Niccolls, who had been hiding behind a vinegar barrel, panicked and fired a stolen gun at the Sheriff. The Sheriff was killed instantly. The resulting Asotin County trial was considered the trial of the century. Taking advantage of the crowds, a local church even sold fried chicken lunches. Ultimately, he was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison; the youngest person in the state of Washington to receive a life sentence. Niccoll's story does not end in despair. He had lived a difficult life of neglect and abuse, and the structure of prison life was beneficial to him. He was able to pursue studies, and excelled academically. Governor Martin took an interest in Niccoll's case, and pardoned him in 1941.
