I see it working for the first few times maybe, but your average driver will just end up ignoring it the same as they do regular crosswalks. A few years back they put in flashing crosswalks. Put flashing/blinking lights into the pavement just before the crosswalk, pedestrians were to push the button to cross. I don't know how many people got hit, but more than a few drivers had no clue what the lights were for so they didn't slow/stop like they were supposed to. They removed all the in-pavement lights, and just have flashing signs on both sides of the street with motion sensors.
