Luftmorder was the size of a B707 and hung out on a shadow-square line sucking on a kerosene drip. I read that in the 80s and parts of it still reside in my mind. Varley was pretty creative, if a bit nutty. I always wanted Hollywood to do the trilogy, but not so much anymore.
