pipedreams
"Although firearms were used in about 74% of homicides in 2019, they comprise less than 9% of violent crimes in America. The vast majority of violent offenses—including robberies, rapes and other sex crimes—almost always involve other weapons or no weapons at all. Consider Chicago, which has become a national symbol of violent crime. While shootings have increased by about 11% this year, the number of murders has decreased slightly in 2021—to 382 as of July 11 compared to 387 for the same time period last year. The dramatic increase Chicago is experiencing is in sex crimes—a 23% rise (1,068 as of July 11 compared with 868 during the same period in 2020)." https://www.theepochtimes.com/despite-what-biden-says-guns-factor-in-only-a-small-percentage-of-violent-crimes_3909621.html "But critics warn that this “guns first” approach ignores a basic fact—about 92% of violent crimes in America do not involve firearms."

LostinTexas
I haven't seen the numbers, but 74% seems high. The definition of homicide is a person killing another person. Now that definition can be twisted out of context as well. Be it justified, such as warding off home invasion, crime, or even LE, any person killing another is "Homicide". For some odd reason, they seem to lean toward including suicide in those numbers as well. Maybe this time, maybe not. Politicians like to twist the truth to unrecognizable definitions for their agenda. The don't tell you cutting stats from NOLA, St. Louis, Chicago, Baltimore, and Memphis and the US becomes one of the safest places in the world. Go figure. 1
Ricordo
It's like Dems (is that the correct pronoun?) are afraid of getting shot. Which is kind of weird because some people wake up each morning thinking, "I'd like to get shot today".

When a person is lawfully executed, homicide is on their death certificate, amirite?

That would be quite a minuscule number, but still falls under the definition.

railfancwb
Remember… it isn’t about the guns. It is about control. Specifically control of generally law abiding citizens. If it was about guns, charges for violating one or another of the many gun laws wouldn’t so frequently be plea bargained away when prosecuting those accused of violent criminal behavior.
