October 14, 1947: U.S. test pilot Chuck Yeager becomes the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound. He went 670 mph in a Bell X-1 rocket (which today hangs in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum) following a drop from a B-29 airplane to break the sound barrier.
