Sept 4th 1950 the Southern 500 NASCAR race was held for the 1st time at Darlington Raceway, in Darlington, S.C.. The race was the only 500 mile NASCAR race until the 1959 Daytona 500. Driver Johnny Mantz won the 1st race.

Those cars are showing the stock in stock car racing, which NASCAR once was.

A friend of mine while in the Navy ran homebrew liquor on his times off.  He says that NASCAR came about because the liquor runners were always claiming the fastest cars to keep away from the federal tax people.  They raced informally and it turned into NASCAR.

Because successful liquor runners were in demand, they made a lot of money.  To keep the federal government off them, they couldn't spend money on tangible assests or they would attract attention.

So they spent considerable amounts on building fast cars for fun too.

No wonder American society put so much emphasis on being able to read.

If you can read, you will buy!

Not really. You only need to be able to recognize the trademarks.
