Yeah, that was a lot of plane to keep track of. That is my favorite WWII fighter.

Imagine being in a furball and not only concentrating on the other guy, but having to make all of those adjustments to coolers, RPM, propeller pitch,, etc.

I expect that most of that came subconsciously with experience, but those aviators were just incredible back then.

 

That talk about cruising speed of 120 knots.

Most modern fighter jets and airliners won't even fly at 120 knots.

I've read that white tape on the cowling was to seal leaks in the gas tanks, or to prevent fuel and oil fumes from smearing the windscreen. Sounds questionable, wouldn't they catch fire? And why not seal all of them? I've never heard of this being a problem with other planes. I can't think of another explanation, though.
