Russian bombers - two of them - flew near Alaska recently and were welcomed by two US interceptors. The bombers were not escorted so apparently just a probing mission.

This is seemingly their answer to our B-52, and maybe about that age, but with dual props rather than jets.

What were the design trade offs which led one country to props and the other to jets?

BUFF was originally conceived with turboprops, IIRC. No hook, though.
