The Studebaker factory V8's were criticized for being heavy for their displacement but they were incredibly durable engines and had good power output for their size which was originally only 232 cubic inches but the Studebaker V8's had forged crankshafts and rods and had at least 25 percent more main bearing area per cubic inch than Cadillac and Oldsmobile and had 18 bolts securing each cylinder head and were designed to accommodate 13 to one compression and had gear driven timing gears instead of timing chains and those Studebaker V8's could run forever.

But the first Cadillac engines were 331 cubic inches and later in the mid 50's, 365, and were also available with dual quad intake manifolds so that's why people went with the Caddy engines in the Studebakers as well as the Chrysler hemis if room could be made in the engine compartments which was not that hard to do.

The Ford Godzilla Engine

The displacement of the 7.3-liter will be familiar to Ford fans, but this one features a cam-in-block pushrod design that creates a more compact package than the last edition that’s still less complex than an overhead cam layout would be.

Known by the codename Godzilla, Ford expects it will be the most powerful gasoline engine in the class, but won’t be revealing its specifications until closer to the truck’s on sale date this fall.

Some Mustang folks are already discussing trying to shoe-horn this thing into their cars. Some think it should fit rather easily.

By this time the General Motors marketing scheme to get customers in with Chevrolet and move them up the line as their income grew.

Chevrolet
Pontiac
Oldsmobile
Buick
Cadillac

There was some overlap of components from Chevy on up, but engines tended toward brand specific designs.

The engines became shared items, quietly, until an Oldsmobile customer was told by the dealer to take his Rocket 88 to a nearby Chevrolet dealer as they would have the parts in stock. After losing a lawsuit about this, General Motors generally ceased relating engines to car brands in advertising.
