It's interesting to compare the GWOT to the war against Japan in the Pacific.

In the GWOT, there were a select few that were willing (wanted) to die for their cause. The 9/11 hijackers, and myriads of others. That made some of them a determined, difficult enemy.

In WWII in the Pacific, we were up against an entire nation that believed their emperor was a living god (no ****), and to die in the service of the emperor was a great honor, to be sought and strived towards.

Anyone that thinks that dropping those bombs wasn't necessary, is simply ignorant. And the story of the emperor getting his recorded surrender broadcast is fascinating. His people had never heard his voice before, it was a watershed moment.
