‘Greater Idaho’ Movement to Make Rural Oregon Counties Part of Idaho is Gaining Traction and Votes

The ‘Greater Idaho’ movement is gaining steam in Oregon.

People who live in the rural parts of Oregon are tired of having the political direction of their state controlled by far left voters in cities like Portland.

The whole thing is gaining so much support that even the liberal media is starting to take notice.

“Our way of life here is based on agriculture, forestry, timber — it’s a resource-based economy, and it feels like that side over there treats us like their playground,” Wallowa resident Garrett Mahon said, referring to the western part of the state, where more voters are registered Democrats.

He said that if Multnomah County, home to Portland, “votes one way, it vetoes the rest of the state.”

It is the second time voters in the small county of Wallowa, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and glistening rivers, have weighed in on the issue. In 2020, residents struck down the idea of joining Idaho by 46 votes. This year, it is winning by just eight ballots.

Agree, think those counties would have better luck creating a campaign against the liberal counties.  Not sure how they would do it but it would have a better chance than what their trying.

Congress doesn’t like changing state lines. On the Utah Nevada state line sit the little towns of Wendover and West Wendover. Both states have tried to move the line to include both towns into one state. Minor changes but Congress won’t do it. So Utah runs schools in both states and Nevada runs fire and police. Paying dual taxes is hard too because best housing is in Utah and casino jobs are in Nevada. Congress likes the nice straight line just like it is. They did allow moving West Wendover Nevada into Mountain Time so the town doesn’t have two time zones.

Congress let part of Virginia break off and become West Virginia, creating two more Senators and two more Electors. Maybe the would-be breakaway counties need to go for the gold and try to become East Oregon State. East Washington State and North California State could follow the pattern. Certainly there is precedent for this.

Tennessee and Virginia moved their shared state line in Bristol to the middle of State Street from one edge, I think Virginia gained a bit of land. This was in then existing city limits, so when the municipal boundary was moved farther west the state line was not shifted. For a few weeks part of State Street became an impromptu drag strip, as police in both cities disclaimed authority and thus responsibility. The state line on that pavement was duly shifted and each city’s police became unpaid deputies in the other city. I don’t know whether the Congress was consulted about either realignment.

Echos of Lincoln’s War continue. He “preserved the union” at all costs by eliminating the free association of sovereign states in a constitutionally limited function federal government into a national government with subservient political divisions called states. To put it simply, “These United States are…” became “The United States is…” Even his highly regarded “Emancipation Proclamation” applied only in the states which had chosen to leave the Union. By returning to the Union “West” Virginia slave owners were no longer covered by the Proclamation.

I wonder whether the New England states which mumbled several times about leaving the Union realized that Lincoln’s War denied them that option as well.

Georgia has tried at least a couple times to move its border north into what the maps show as Tennessee. First time they wanted the wealth represented by Copper Hill. More recently they have wanted to tap the Tennessee River to benefit Atlanta. Georgia’s claim has been that the Colonial Era surveyors made mistakes.
