kerbie18
Training exercises generally mean that you must be unarmed for safety. We even go so far as to search each other to make sure weapons don't enter the training exercise. It would really suck to find yourself in need of a real weapon when you are in a training exercise. That is just some bad luck right there.
Fog
The soldier is the weapon and everything else is just a tool, but it would really suck to find yourself without the tools you need.
Mrs.Cicero
Tragic. Perhaps they should have thought through the potential need for live ammo due to this before they held unarmed training exercises in that area... This wasn't a Black Swan event- bear attacks are not an unknown occurrence up there.

They should have had an overwatch, keeping an eye over the unarmed soldiers

We had a whole bunch of these 19 year old bed wetters go right past my buddy and I. They never knew we were there and we weren't wearing winter camo. They just slogged along totally unaware of their surroundings. BTW. I killed a(nother) moose.
