OK, I'm trying to cough up some dough here, but the only option is PayPal. I don't deal with those gun hating neanderthals.

Other options ?

That’s all I’ve got, at the moment. I’m not a fan of theirs either, but I do enjoy the irony of their being used to help finance a firearms enthusiast website.

Don't (won't) use paypal.  Any way to, like, send a money order?

Ok, I’m not sure if mail-in donations will actually cover this expense, but I’ll give it a shot. I just signed up for a PO Box. I’ll go in later today and finalize it, then post the address here and somewhere in the donation system. Thanks.

You owe me a Gold Star or something next to my name. I held my nose and went ahead with PayPal.

Reminds me of that old story; the punchline goes something like this,

" We have already determined what you are, we are just haggling about the price now. "

>:(

How did the other site grow into a profitable enterprise to the point of being worth selling for a tidy amount of money?

Sponsors? Banner Ads? What does it take? Do it again.

The Internet was very different then. There was a huge number of people going online for the first time every week and there was far less competition for their attention. There weren’t sites like Reddit and FaceBook and You Tube, etc to compete with. The Internet has changed fundamentally and so has the way people use it. In order to get a regular user today, you have to entice them away from wherever they are already spending their time.

Another big difference is the fact that Glock Talk was parked on top of an extremely popular keyword set. TBS doesn’t have that advantage. I can compensate for that, but it will take a lot of work, but my time for such things has been limited by my efforts to keep the bills paid, mine and the site’s.

it is a lot harder to build and grow a site today than it was when I started GT. It isn’t impossible and I still believe TBS can get there. It is just going to be a struggle. As for banner ads and such, the site just doesn’t have the traffic to entice advertisers yet. I’m working on it though.

Things have changed.

People were putting stupid amounts of money into anything that had .com on the end of it.   You could have sold the URL myproctologyist.com for big money back then. A friend of mine squatted on a few cherry domains and eventually purchased his condo and later a house with their sale.

One of the hard things to do is build a community of users.

Yeah, me too...Oh well.  Still glad to have found it!!

Same here.   I had a rare debate online with someone here.  And we remained polite and disagreed.

We agreed to alert, Eric about it.   I mean....usually those things turn into napalm infused insanity.

This is a civil place.

Not just internet. The person who created and later sold “Ryder Truck Rentals” signed a five year non compete. After that ended he tried to create another truck rental company. Couldn’t do it. During the interval that place in the market had filled up to the extent there was no room for a startup.

There is just about a forum for anything.  Seriously.  If you have a rubber inflatable girlfriend...there's a forum for that.   I know i just checked.

There are some seriously odd people in the world.  Some of them one bicycle repair kit away from love.

And some dude at the FBI is so tired of seeing my finger prints.

SEAL Team Six got Bin Laden's porn stash.

It's been 10 years.  I'd still be washing my hands.

Your post gives this sign a risqué new meaning.

i was more familiar with another company.  The access roads to the missile sites were basically a very long two lane paved driveway, sometimes a mile long.  A few of them were notorious for being local " Lover's Lanes "; private roads with basically no traffic after hours. The were marked  " Official Business Only ", but that didn't stop overactive boys and girls with raging hormones from stopping halfway down the road to spend a few quiet minutes.

We called them all the same generic name, " Firestone Drive ".

" Where the rubber meets the road. "

There is now a check/money order payment option in the donations system. Just click on the Payment option on the donations form and choose Mail-In Payment option. Then complete the donation form and you will see the address to mail the check/money order to. Thanks again, everyone.

Sorry, Eric.

Talisker Storm Scotch Whisky : The Whisky Exchange

We should name a whiskey after you.  :)

I can’t drink it anyway. I got so drunk on whiskey once in the Army that to this day, the smell of it makes me nauseous. I do love some tequila or really good vodka though. Mostly tequila.

BGH, have you considered the advertising value to be had by supplying your Gold Patrons with BoreSite logo Wenger Pocket Tool Chest knives? Such an tool identifies its owner as a well-traveled gentleman of discriminating taste and powerful influence. The sight of such an implement naturally invites the observer to ask "Excuse me, my good fellow. Where do you go online to make inquiries regarding firearms, politics, potent potables, fine automobiles and similar interests?" This would provide the Patron with an opportunity to act as a "BoreSight Ambassador" to bring new blood to the site.

Just a thought. It's what I do.
