When they team up multiple engines like that, is there a common buss type control system that controls each engines function by the front engine?

Diesels, yes...

One crew, X number of units, 5 digit horsepower.

Steam as in the second picture, no. One crew per locomotive. Need a developed sense of who is pulling the most. Whistle signals for forward, stop, reverse.

Maybe each day is the only day of your life, tomorrow is not a given.  If time is quantized, then each event is unique.
