I got a weird kid. There is no hair on this story, I swear. This just happened this morning

IHOP has unlimited pancakes, so here we go. Mama puts on her headphones (she has been getting into K Movies)

halfway, Mercy (listening to Diamonte) asks “Dad, is Paranoid the most famous Black Sabbath song?”

uh...I suppose. “Why?”

Followed by a conversation about riffs and hooks, song structure, how you can build a song on a bass line or a riff, keep up the tempo and as long as the lyrics sound right with the melody it can be very recognizable. And that’s how it can become popular.

You can also come up with a simple riff, start slow, build up and add instruments into a huge solo and outro even if the lyrics make no sense but sound right.

”who did that?”

  Siri.....

we got to the parking lot, mama takes off her headphones and says. “Mercy, your listening to Stairway to Heaven?”

”I like the guitar but the lyrics don’t make any sense. They should have gone with Ozzy”

Then we went on to dinosaurs

this kid is weird

Get out your slide rules, ya numpties.

What data do we have to form a conclusion?

We have Johnny's father, identified as having five sons.

Four of the sons are named.

If, as stated, Johnny's father has five sons, is not Johnny a son of Johnny's father?

Four sons are accounted for.

The name of the fifth son is: Johnny.

No, Johny is that rag the hospital gives you to wear that covers nothing. Or the guy that used to the best late night comedy/interview show, "Here's Johnny!"

Dammit.  The clue is when the father says, "Come here Dammit!".

Don't feel bad.

Human cognizance, the way we perceive and realize stuff, is naturally sensitive to patterns, especially grouping things.

The problem, as presented, took advantage of that by giving us the progression of Z_se and supplied a pattern: the English language vowels a,e,i,o and we naturally want to follow the pattern with the final vowel, u.

However, all of that is irrelevant to the solution of the problem, no?

We can solve the problem simply by evaluating the first statement and then knowing the names of four sons, whatever those names are, whether they have a pattern or not.

It takes a lot of experience and mental discipline to avoid the trap of latching on to a seemingly valid conclusion when there is other, more convincing evidence available.

<---  pop culture challenged

NB this would be a great teaching moment for Mercy.

Do not mistake her feel dumb (as if you ever would) and explain how the problem is best solved and what the pitfall is.

Get her on the road to disciplined thinking now and she will thank you every day for the rest of her life.

She got it on the first try. She loves those things.

(still weird)
