We had a First Sergeant who was born on an ice flow during a seal hunt. I swear the cold didn’t bother him.

When I was in Basic, they had a company in the barracks beside us start a new cycle about 8 weeks into ours. They were a cohort unit from Alaska. The Army was preparing to add a new infantry unit up there and they were seeding them with Inuit volunteer units. Every person in the cohort training company came from the same area. Many of them were family to each other.

Anyway, by the time my company was getting ready to graduate, it was late April and starting to warm up in southern Georgia. It was by no means hot yet, but you would think we were all in Death Valley in July, the way the Alaskan training company was carrying on. Those poor bastards were hating life. They could no doubt handle the cold, but even moderately warm temperatures were hell on them.
