Yeah, that would be loud. I got caught in a hailstorm in the field once, when I was in the Army. The hail bounced off the kevlar helmet with a dull thud and the rucksack and flak vest kept most of the rest of me from getting beat up much.

My worst hail experience was on a motorcycle in the middle of nowhere, going too fast, when the hail showed up. Luckily, we found a gas station after a few minutes and huddled under their roof over the pump island. Even wearing gloves, hail hitting knuckles at highway speed freaking hurts.
