I think the Europeans did more streamlining of steam locomotives than Americans. I submit that the Norfolk & Western “J” class 4-8-4s when streamlined were as beautiful as any streamlined steam locomotives anywhere, closely followed by their streamlined “K” class 4-8-2s. J facing left K facing right. Other contenders?

Southern Railway and Norfolk & Western jointly operated “The Tennessean” between Washington DC and Memphis TN. Initially it went between Washington and Lynchburg VA behind Southern’s only streamlined steam, a Pacific. Between Lynchburg and Bristol VA an N&W streamlined J pulled the train. Between Bristol and Memphis Southern’s streamlined diesels were used. This is Southern’s streamlined steam...
