That could have been forgiven. The problem was that they made a conscious decision that the cost of paying off the dead customers and lawyers was less than the cost of recalls, so they covered up the problem and didn't recall the firebombs. Think there was a steel shield to protect the tank from the differential omitted to save a few dollars each vehicle. Lawsuit(s) probably cost Ford more than omitting shields had saved them.
