Their armory is impressive. Stuff from the 14th century still maintained in battle ready condition. I mean sharpened and handles oiled and newly wrapped. On other racks state of the art weapons including night vision and thermal imaging and rumors of some ultra high tech magnetometers. Look into the 1527 sacking of Rome. The Swiss Guard are good. BTW. The silver helmets are hand crafted the way they have been for hundreds of years. The black ones are 3D printed. They have vents at the top and an internal structure that creates an up draft for cooling. Edited January 12, 2021 by Batesmotel

To be a guard one must be male, Swiss, a graduate of a military academy and Catholic. In reality they are Swiss mercenaries. Historically speaking when you signed a contract with them. It was for the duration of their lives on the contract. Thus the origin of The Lion of Lucerne. It is a memorial to the 760 men who died in Paris defending King Louis XVI at the time of the revolution. Their names are inscribed there.
Historian
Just found this out. Very interesting. The M1868 Papal States Remington rifle is chambered in a cartridge unique to the Vatican, the 12.7 x 45, but which is very nearly the American .50-70 caliber. https://www.the-american-catholic.com/2009/06/10/the-vaticans-rifles/ I had no idea! How interesting! 1
