One of the good things we experience in our annual vacation into Northern Minnesota, is the opportunity to see the mama Duck leading strings of a dozen or more baby chicks around the periphery of the lake feeding, then into a weed bed for the evening.  Seeing a string of baby ducks following mama across a bay about 1/4 mile wide is amazing.

I have seen Eagles make passes at the chicks, but surprisingly they miss more often than they get one.  I appears that if a mama with a brood is lost, or disappears for some reason, another mama duck will simply adopt her chicks and they add to hers.
