Huaco Kid
Our best friend, Kurt, he was twice as big as us, and lived in the hood, and would kick our ass, on regular occasion, for no purpose whatsoever... "Coach" (wrestling), called him out, lined-up before class. Kurt needed a good "talking". They went into the locker room. A lot of metal-banging-sounds. Kurt came out two minutes later, and got back in line. Coach came out, right behind him, and class resumed as normal. I think it was a "draw". Huaco Kid
Coaches name was "Gus". DeAugustino. He'd nail my pencil-neck, against the lockers, and rifle my Army-jacket pockets, while I was gagging for breath. And let me go. But my nickle-bags were all in my sock, so I got to live to see another day. (and get your neck twisted 470°, in gym)
Huaco Kid
Many, many years after high school..... They said Gus offed himself. Which no one saw coming. He was a most respected, retired, high school instructor, and community participant. Much loved by his sports kids. We don't know.
Huaco Kid
Mr. May.
Huaco Kid
When I started playing hockey, before school sports, before Mr. May.... There was hockey.
Huaco Kid
We were Squirts, at first. (I don't think you can call us that, any more)
Huaco Kid
My very first North Park League game (Auld Brothers), some kid got a break-away, so I threw my stick at him. That's against the rules. And a penalty shot.
Huaco Kid
I didn't understand. We played hocke 20 times each day, in the street, and throwing sticks at kids was pretty normal. Until the "Man" comes along....
Huaco Kid
So... I don't know if it was a goal, we were too little for that, or sitting in the box (WTF is this??!?) Or what.
Huaco Kid
So you can't do that. We all learned a lesson that day.
Huaco Kid
John Kalinsky (JK), our coach, was a post-teenager, doing, I don't know, dealing with a bunch a little ****-ups that throw sticks at each other.

Huaco Kid
This one game game, i don't know, we were ahead 10-0. We didn't know, but gleaned. That it was a grudge.
Huaco Kid
JK hated this guy (his best friend) (and they had been ****-talking).... and we won. JK slammed, and broke, his clipboard. And chucked it across the ice, towards the other bench, and it frisbee'd, and almost took the other guy's head, with SMACK. And then they had a loud discussion in the middle of the ice. And we got ice-cream and hotdogs for the first time, evar!
Huaco Kid
If you were doing what, what?, nothing!, and the police were invovled. Or the high school resource team.... What, wait, what? Mr May would come get you.
Huaco Kid
He coached elementary (squirts), middle (bantam), and high (I don't know, Dickheads were our name) He was a guidance counselor that kept 1000 kids on the right path. He was a 'nuck, his boys played college.
Huaco Kid
He's the only reason I didn't end up in jail, with my neck twisted 470°, many many times.
Huaco Kid
He died several years ago. It's the most attended funeral the county has ever seen. Some busses didn't get within 20 miles.
Huaco Kid
We once showed, at 4am, at North Park rink, for battle! But it snowed (outside rink) 3', overnight. So, we all kids shoveled the ice, and it took a long time, and when we were done, our ice-time was over. So the highschool-kids refs said we shoveled much harder, and awarded us the game. I guess you could do that back then.
Huaco Kid
Pracitce, and games, were at 4am, at the outside rink. WOOOOO! Hockey! But I was, like, 10. Dad was, like, 50.
Huaco Kid
I was just a ****-head kid, at 10, at 4am, going hockey. Dad was just a drunk-head guy, at 50, at 4am, probably waaaay drunker than you need to be.

Huaco Kid
The Union guys don't open the ice at 4am. Or drive the zamboni. You find shovels and clean it. They are all in the shed, but they ain't coming out..
