It seems that large animals have just as much desire to interact with others as small animals. However, they do appear to have a knowledge of "size", and the ability to control their actions to keep within reason relative to the other animal. My neighbor's 80 lb. Rotty would play with my 9lb. Yorkie (the Yorkie didn't realize he was a munchie) so the Rotty would walk when they played chase. Even my daughter's 60 lb. Akita would play with the Yorkie, knowing the size and strength differential.
