While patrolling across Okinawa, Private First Class Harry Kizirian witnessed Japanese soldiers shooting at a party of Marine stretcher bearers attempting to evacuate wounded. All the Marines were pinned down and taking even more casualties. Kizirian rushed forward to help. He moved into the open and was hit multiple times, raking his stomach and both legs with bullets. He hit the ground and continued crawling on his elbows, dragging the rest of his body behind him. He fired as he crawled, eventually killing all 12 of the enemy who were firing on the stretcher bearers and allowing them to continue their work. For his inspiring determination and heroism, Kizirian was awarded the Navy Cross.

Kizirian survived and returned to his home state of Rhode Island after spending 17 months deployed in the Pacific. During that time, he earned the Navy Cross, a Bronze Star with "V", and 2 Purple Hearts. He recovered from his wounds, but underwent numerous surgeries and suffered permanent disabilities. He entered a career in the Postal Service, eventually being appointed Postmaster of Providence, RI in 1961 by JFK. He passed away in 2002 at the age of 77.
