No more 50 round boxes of the good stuff?

Here are some possible alternatives:

Fiocchi uses Hornady XTP's in some of their ammo and it's pretty good stuff. I've tried it in 9mm but not in 40 or 45.

I like the XTP round, especially in my 10mm.  At 30 cents each per loaded 9mm round it's half the price of what HST 9mm is now. Plus I'm starting to really like Fiocchi ammo.  Never paid much attention before, but since getting into 300 blk I've been buying more of their loads.

I am interested in trying the new Federal hydro shock in my 9mm. Supposed to be a minimum of 15 inch penetration. Will see soon enough if it is for real or a sales pitch.

What's the bullet weight and velocity?

1060 fps. So compared to the federal 147 grain Hydra-shok, you're giving up more than 10 grains of mass to gain only 60 fps of velocity. However bullet construction might be improved with the newer 135 grain bullet. The biggest difference between the two may be the cost. the 135 grain Hydra-shok "Deep" is premium ammo and sells only in 20 round boxes while the older 147 grain load is available in 50 round boxes for less.

However, Lucky gunner "scientific laboratories" has tested both ammo and  theyfound the new stuff to work as advertised but in the same tests the Hornady 124 grain custom ammo out-penetrated both and got good expansion but with less retained bullet weight.

If I were worried about velocity, i would get the Underwood xtreme defender 65gr at 1800fps.3ff26a3142c9029b493944050be27d81.jpg

The 15 inch penetration is perfect. Any more and I would start to worry about over penetration in a frontal shot and if I wanted more, I would go with the Underwood/LeHigh xtreme penetrator 115gr at 30+

15 inches and good expansion sounds really good to me.

Every gun I carry has a backup mag with the extreme penetrators.  They're just a little too expensive to shoot regularly for me.

Sorry, no solutions o alternatives to offer.  But convinced it's all about ammo manufacturers conniving how to make more and more profit!

If they can get their customers to pay double for half the quantity, more power to them.

I look at this as a self inflicted wound. Gun sales, ammunition sales are down since the election and these companies are trying to secure their bottom line. If gun owners looked at these relatively calm times as harvest season and continued to buy then manufacturers might not turn their focus to the highest margin products.

Instead of supporting these companies during the lull period gun owners will wait till the next democrat administration is seated then.....PANIC!!!
