The most famous landmark of Greece's Naxos Island is Portara, a massive 2,500-year-old marble doorway that leads to an unfinished temple.

I was fortunate to have a tour of many interesting historic places in and governed by, Greece curtesy of the US Navy in 1958.  As a youngster I read many books on Ancient Greece and the historical and fictional tales.  I can't tell you just how awe inspiring it was to walk among the remnants of places I read about in some of the oldest stories told.  History is all around you in Athens, Piraeus, Rhodes, and surrounding coastal towns.  I even walked the streets of Crete and looked upon the Labyrinths reputedly the home of the Minotaur.   It is a very special place and time.
