gwalchmai
Just for fun I drilled a couple of holes into this log with a 1" spade bit. I was amazed at the result. It burned for six hours and made a great (small) cookfire. I'll make some more. I think three this size should be about right for that pit.
Fog
In the woods we would cut a cross with a chainsaw through a chunk of firewood from a standing dead tree to cook food and heat our hands. Sometimes I'd hollow out the middle a little with a couple extra plung cuts with the bar. Used the "noodles" from chainsaw cuts to light the log. Cast iron pan on top. Viola!
Huaco Kid
I often use three small logs (~6" across) and stand them on end next to each other in a triangle. Then light a small sawdust fire (or some firestarter chunks) in the center. Let it catch and grow slowly and it usually turns into a jet-flame out the top. Cast iron pan on top. If you let it run itself, they usually last a really long time. 5
