pipedreams
"The Department of Education expanded an ongoing review of U.S. universities to include the two Ivy League institutions, according to the Wall Street Journal. Federal investigators allege that Harvard and Yale are part of a string of universities that did not report at least $6.5 billion in funds received from countries such as China and Saudi Arabia. The Trump administration says that Yale has not reported at least $375 million in foreign funding after the university failed to file reports for three years from 2014 to 2017. Last month, federal authorities arrested Harvard’s chemistry department chairman, Charles Lieber, for allegedly hiding his work with a Chinese university while getting paid $1.5 million from the foreign government. While Lieber was working with the Chinese, he also took more than $15 million in funding from the U.S. to conduct research." https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/trump-administration-is-investigating-harvard-and-yale-for-financial-ties-to-china https://www.wsj.com/articles/education-department-investigating-harvard-yale-over-foreign-funding-11581539042 1
janice6
Historically we have been footing the bill for many research programs, where the results get to foreign nationals damn near as quick as to the government agencies providing the funding. You wonder how Chinese are able to construct the things that the US has done breakthrough work to develop. Ethics have a price that is cheaper than if the foreign nations had to fund equivalent research to develop. It's a shame that we have no intellectual property security. 2
janice6
In most cases,m it isn't that these other nations lack the smarts to come up with solutions to the same problems. It's more that the cost and actual process of concept development is horrendously expensive and time consuming. So with the help of Americans who value money more than their country's financial and physical security, they give away the farm for a few shekels. Published theoretical papers contain hints of technological breakthroughs that subsequent clever people from other countries may turn into an actual concept. These aren't the problem, after all, they are in public domain. It's the people among us that have no allegiance that are willing to give away American security, and even potentially it's existence, that are the scum of our society.
Historian
They send their spies here to gain critical knowledge. Then send information home. Then they go into industry. Then they send information home. 2
holyjohnson
or they pay for entire departments in Universities to allow Chinese "Students" to take part and oversee some Critical Experiments and R&D to stall them here, that way its easier when they go home to restart it and finish it without the Hindrances.. you mean China doesn't just give Millions of Dollars to University's with no string attached??
