pipedreams
"Seventeen years ago today, the U.S. and Britain went to war to remove the Taliban from power in Afghanistan. It was morally and politically justified by the Taliban's failure to surrender al Qaeda terrorists responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks. America's goals should be to avoid making things worse in Afghanistan, contain the Taliban, and focus more on the Islamic State. These are not lofty goals, but lofty goals have proved to be pipe dreams that produced a 17-year nightmare." https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/editorials/unhappy-17th-birthday-afghanistan-war
blackjack
Interesting you could find an article with a quote containing your TBS screen name. Personally, once the US moved beyond what was working with the smallest on-ground force, The Horse Soldiers, it was destined to be Viet Nam all over again. Fortunately, fewer have been killed than in that war and that makes each loss more precious.

You would though they would taken a lesson from what happened to the Russian's a few years earlier.

Silentpoet
In hindsight we should have nuked our best guess of bin laden’s location and declared victory.

c10bonanza
That’s a damn long time. I wonder how many average citizens actually realize we are still engaged in that conflict?

EricB
“No one starts a war--or rather, no one in his sense ought to do so--without first being clear in his mind what he intends to achieve by the war and how he intends to conduct it.” ― Carl Von Clausewitz
