http://www.treelinem14.com/  This is a great source of wood and fiberglass. Good people .

http://m14forum.com/forums.php   Watch the classifieds here. You can pick up a good fiberglass stock for $80 up and some just need sanding and painting. Many wood stocks avaiable also.

If money is no object  https://mcmillanusa.com/mcmillan-rifle-stocks/tactical-stocks-m1a/

http://agcomposites.com/shop/rifle-stocks/classic_m1a_m14/  These are bad ass. Carbon fiber and rigid but pricey.

Sniffy, I just ordered a birch stock from treeline. I appreciate the info you provided. I owe you some beer.

Cool. You know you owe us a pic once you get it set up, right? :)

One of their fiberglass stocks have been on my list for a beat around stock. Maybe try my hand on an old school camo paint job.

I definitely will. As long as they don't send me a piece of ****. I got what they call an excellent plus with Winchester markings. We shall see! I was going to go fiberglass but changed my mind. Your camo paint job would be cool on one of those.

Here are some pics of the stock I bought. It's in very nice shape. All the hardware is in great shape too. I'm going to try and lighten it up by removing the built up grime using fine steel wool and mineral spirits. Then I'll apply some tung oil. I don't want it to be a showpiece. Just good and functional.

Looks like a good piece of wood. Treeline has some refinishing tips here....http://info.treelinem14.com/Refinishing_tips.html

If it looks like cosmoline on it a lot of guys use a degreaser like Simple Green, let it soak then wash it off with a brush and detergent. Good luck and keep the pics coming. :rifle:

That's a good looking piece, Keith. Honestly, better than I expected.

Looking forward to how the tung turns out. I still have to oil my stock, but can't decide between BLO, Tung, or Teak. Leaning towards Tung.

Thanks Sniffy, Joe.

The stock really is nice, especially the more that I clean it up. It only has two small dings that I won’t even bother with. I think the DOD stamp and the proofing stamp are pretty cool. I’ll follow up with the results of the tung oil. I thought about using BLO but after some research opted for the pure tung oil. Less sheen and better resistance to solvents is what I learned.

Here’s the finished product. I put on 4 applications of pure tung oil after using simple green and steel wool to give it a deep cleaning. Last step was a thin coat of Johnson’s paste wax and a light buff. Not too shiny and not too dull. Right where I wanted it. I’ll post more pics once I get the rifle fully assembled.

Is the stock on yet?   If not how about you lay off the beer and get it done?   :599c64b322d5b_tongueout:

I’m glad you reminded me. I finally put it all back together just the other day. I also added the fake auto-selector switch that @Joe! recommended. Cool.

That looks really nice. What are you using for grease? Aardvark sperm?  :crylikeender:

Thanks, sniffy.

I be using this stuff. Not many aardvarks in my neck of the woods.
